Kobudo Weaponry Volume 9: Hanbo
It is commonly believed that Okinawan farming and fishing tools evolved into lethal weapons of self-defense when the Satsuma samurai clan forbade the peasants from carrying arms.
The hanbo is a middle-length wood or bamboo stick about 3 feet in length. It is believed to have been derived from a walking stick, the handle of a rake or shovel, or from half of a bo staff.
